I have a Zenith ZHD311 DVD player that includes a 5.1 speaker system. I know it’s crappy.
The DVD playback works just fine and all 5 speakers work to play the sound.
However, I also have the audio L and audio R cables going from my TV to the Zenith player. I have Verizon FiOS and apparently, the HDTV is broadcast via Doulby digital 5.1. I have a Mitusibhi HTDV that supports surround sound too. However, for some reason, only the front right and the front left speakers play on the Zenith system when connected to the TV!
Is this normal for 5.1 speaker systems? If so, then the 5.1 speaker system only works with the DVD player? If not, how can I connect the TV to a 5.1 speaker system so that all 5 speakers play. My TV has audio out (R) and audio out (L), and “Digital Audio out” that looks just like an RCA out….

First problem…When you hook up the “red and white” audio cables, it’s only 2-channel…That’s why you’re only getting 2 speakers…Your Zenith should have a “button” on it that turns 2-channel sound into 5-channel sound…Check your manual.
Part 2…To get even BETTER surround sound, hook up that “Digital Audio Out” to your Zenith instead of the “red and white”…This actually sends a “REAL” 5-channel signal straight to the speakers without any help…It sounds MUCH better than “fake” 5-channel sound derived from just 2 channels.
Hook up the digital audio output of TV or the HD box (if you have one) to your surround sound system. You will then get surround sound (digital audio). Only digital audio connectors carry surround sound information. Audio L and R cables do not - only stereo signal.
The digital audio out is what you need to use. It’s a coaxial audio connector. When using the red and white audio out, you are only sending stereo sound to your receiver, so that is all it will play. If you have a coaxial audio in on the receiver buy a cable to hook that up, and it should work. If the receiver only has an optical port, check your verizon box, that may have optical.
With only the L & R cables hooked up you will only get stereo out.
To get your 5.1 out you have to hook up the digital audio out from the TV to the AV amp. Check your manuals, it should describe this. There are different flavours of the digital audio out, make sure that they are compatible and configured properly at the AV amp. You should now get your surround sound from your TV if there is a compatible signal present or set to simulated surround sound. Good Luck.
When I got my surround sound I read the manual and it states which speakers will work with the DVD, the radio, the TV, Etc. All my speakers work with the DVD, but only 2 of them (and I dont remember which ones work with my Stereo and 1 with the TV. That sucks huh!
does it have dolby pro logic?
